#10: “War is Un-understandable” - 10/16/2023

PawNotes 🐾

A variety of wise people have said in different ways that truth is the first casualty in war. In times of war, the best arbiter of truth is perhaps the actions of the combatants. If you examine their actions open-mindedly, the truth will come out. This is harder than it sounds because 1) many news sources are biased in one direction or another, 2) the actions of war are not things we generally want to look at closely, and 3) no side in any war is perfect.

To strike a warmer note, allow us to share something beautiful from Norman Rockwell, a popular American painter in the 20th century. He was well-known for capturing warm slices of American culture almost like warm pieces of apple pie. In what our family views as one of his best paintings, Rockwell captured the universal essence of “the Golden Rule”. This work is made more beautiful if you read his accompanying notes below the painting (see text below the image at the same link) that note his study of different religions and how most seem to have a version of the Golden Rule.

Principled readers, we are confident you’ll agree that we would all do well to live consistently and sincerely whichever version of that truth that you know best.
